Might be curl grubs in the soil, dig deep down and see. There is a spray to get rid of them.

In relation to the Cape Gooseberry be sure they are golden with no green when picked for eating. I have read the plant, and green fruit, is poisonous to animals including humans. Even fowl will steer clear of it. I did research when I noticed the sheep would not eat it. It makes a sumptuous jam and are yummy coated in chocolate.

Leo, I have minimal bulb growth with Bullls blood in Brisbane. Try any of the Detroit beets next time (they have green tops), and keep up the liquid fertiliser fortnightly.

Hi Leo, You might trying feeding them a bit more with a fish emulsion or similar type of organic liquid fertiliser. It's possible the cold winter has slowed them up, and if they're not getting enough nutrition/water that would add to their woes. Take heart, I sometimes find exactly the same thing happens with mine. I would also plant some more seedings/seeds now - with spring coming on you should get a bit more action from the next planting. I have to disagree,fish emulsion will give them a boost and appear correct. It's Nitrogen,very good for leaf growth.but root growth luv potassium and phos. By adding Nitrogen it increases leaf growth. A root vegetable wants P(phos) then K (potassium).NPK is rated on all fertiliser. PS you can eat beetroot leaves.Gaz

I planted tubers on 1st july and they are already growing. My large potato tub is looking like trees at the moment as all the potato tubers have sprouted. I find this to be a good time of year to plant tubers. I'm located in Brissie.

Here in the US we have a product called: "Sluggo" a pelleted bait that works on snails as well as slugs. (Inexpensive too.) The label says it is safe for both pets and food crops-and it biodegrades. I use it for my strawberries and it works well for me. Look and see if you can use it or it is available in your country. Good Luck. P.S. I buy mine at Home Depot home improvement store and it's available on Amazon.

Put a tub of beer and dishquid next to the plants. they are attracted to the beer and they get drunck fall in and can't get out.

I have a couple of strawberry plants growing in a pot. My problem is that the strawberries aren't ripening, instead they are turning brown. This is my first time growing strawberries so I don't have any idea what I'm doing wrong. Can you help?

They are probably genetically modified seeds. You are best to buy open pollinated seeds as you can save them each season and re-plant. Many seeds are treated chemically. Buy the right ones at the start, avoid anything to do with Monsanto products, and join a seed savers group. Happy gardening!

Looking at growing roma tomatoes this year and looking at doing multiple crops. How long after should i plant the 2nd crop of roma tomatoes to replace them once they have finished? So as soon as they die i can pull them out and put in new transplants.

you can plant it now in July in the middle of winter frost, but it won't come up till it starts getting warm. Mine are in the ground at the moment, and we get frosts till early November. It will come up when it's ready.

We can grow most vegetables successfully but never have any luck with beans. I have planted some and they are looking pale and not growing. The soil has lots of old horse manure and I fertilise my veggies fortnightly with seasol . Last week was cold for our area and we had frost. The plants are watered regularly. I would appreciate your advice on what we are doing wrong. Thank you

It depends how cold your winters are; if you've had frost and temps are dropping below 15 degrees at night, it's currently too cold to be growing green beans with great success. I've only grown broad beans in the past and they were quite tolerant of temps into the low 30s, so provided your Spring doesn't heat up too quickly you're probably best waiting until late August or even September. Again, really depends on the nightly lows. Also beware that Seasol is merely a tonic, not a fertiliser (it doesn't have the nutrients in appreciable quantities to make a difference). The same company makes a comprehensive liquid fertiliser called 'Powerfeed' which, combined with Seasol, has worked wonders for my container chillies in the past (the standard version isn't certified organic but there is a certified organic version available now, albeit much diluted compared to the standard version). Depending on how many nutrients are left over from the manure, the lack of regular fertiliser may also be the problem - so I'd try something like Powerfeed or Searles 5-in-1 liquid fertiliser in addition to the Seasol (every week or two). You will find that there are less leaves after flowering but they are still useable
