Watermelon 19 Nov, anon (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Too much water.
Watermelon 02 Feb, Chris (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Irregular watering or lots of rain just as they ripen will make them split as they suck in a load of water after being dry for a while. Also temperature changes between cold at night and hot in the day - a straw mulch around the melons can help keep the temperatures even.

Ginger 21 Jan, (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
where do we purchase ginger seeds/seedlings for planting
Ginger 01 Mar, Lauren (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Just buy a ginger root from your local grocery store. Look for pieces that have what look like little shell like points along the root. Those are the growth points. Carefully cut the root into pieces, trying to keep as much root as possible around the points - this is where your new plant will get its starter nutrients, so the bigger it is the better the chance it will grow. Bury those about 5cm below the surface of your soil and water well. This makes a stunning indoor plant because when the leaves get big enough if you brush against them they give off a lovely spicy smell.

I'm interested in growing garlic in the Eastern Cape. We get a lot of snow in winter, but summer is not that hot. I've only got one concern there are a lot of moles in the ground and would like to know if it will affect my planting of garlic. please be so kind to advise me on this matter. Thank you

Garlic is a perfect mole deterrent! I plant garlic among my flowering bulbs.

Can I use potting soil only or mix it with sand?

It should grow fine just in potting soil but might need some extra fertilizer like watering with liquid seaweed as potting soil can be quite low in nutrients.
