Ginger 02 May, Klippie Melck (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Can edible ginger be grown in a shade-cloth tunnel in Central Free State, we have plenty of water. Presume next planting would be in Spring after last frosts. Sliced ginger with a teaspoon of honey in half a cup of boiling water is great for easing and relieving cold systems.
Strawberry Plants 30 Apr, (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
I would suggest that you leave the runners go and create new plants . But only 2 to 3 runners per plant and cut the rest of the runners back. Since they are already in their second year you will have to replace your plants next season , and all the baby plants you have started from the runners can create your new bedding for the next 3 years. You will have to start a new bedding next season rather make your new bedding now so that you can get rid of the harmfull grubs and grass then plant a cover crop such as buckwheat before you transplant your new plants out .

French tarragon 29 Mar, Jacquie (South Africa - Dry summer sub-tropical climate)
Found some French Tarragon (Artemesia dracunculus) at the Stellenbosch market this morning at the plant staff. First time I've seen it there. Confusingly the botanical name for Russian tarragon is very similar (Artemesia Dracunculoides Pursch) and no good for cooking.

Garlic 22 Mar, R Craig (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Garlic bought is supermarkets is usually imported from China, and has been irradiated and will not grow, have tried without success. Found nursery near Montecasino in Sandton, owner of which grew garlic at home and sold the excess, he told me about this. Best places to look are nurseries or small greengrocers.

Watermelon 20 Mar, Kerry Porter (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
my Watermelon plant has just started bearing fruit. can the fruit get eaten by bugs or stung? what can i do to prevent this
Watermelon 29 Aug, Brendan (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Hi Kerry, I make fruit fly traps to catch most of them as they destroy my fruit. Cut the top of a coke bottle off and invert it back into the base section. Make a small hole in the cap so the fly enters but cannot leave. In the bottle, place a piece of banana and add "Apple Cider Vinegar" Do not cover the banana completely. Once the banana starts to ferment in the vinegar the smell attracts the flies. Good Luck....
Watermelon 23 Jan, Andre Lotz (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Thanks for the FF trap. I gave up on watermelons as EVERY fruit gets stung. We use a similat trap for mozzies! Andre
