In answer to those seeking advice about where to buy Jerusalem artichokes in Cape Town: I bought some Jerusalem artichokes at the Vineyard Deli, Kenridge, chopped them into small pieces and planted them in a large wooden container. The plants are now (October) about 50 cm high and not flowering yet, but looking extremely green and sturdy.

Hi, I managed to get some seed potatoes from a local garden center. Even if they don't have any when you visit, it may be worth asking if they can source any for you. I'm not an expert but you may be able to use shop bought potatoes. Leave them to sprout and try!

It can be done with extra care. Carrots and the carrot family generally do not enjoy their roots being disturbed. It is better to sow in situ.
