I found rhubarb in Riebeek West nursery and in Wellington nursery next to the Perfect place. I think it was ringard Victoria. If it's sold in local nurseries I believe they'll be fine in our climate. Mine has been growing for a few weeks now, transplanted in a shade net house and still doing good

You can buy online at Hadeco. They have stock at the moment but sell out quickly as they only ship for a couple of months each year.
Cabbage 25 Jan, Micahael (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Good day. I have planted cabbage last year in January 2018. Instead of the veg growing into a big bulb (ball like shape) on the ground, it grew upright on a stock. Looking on pictures i can see that it is supposed to grow like a big ball on the ground and not vertically up. What is the reason for that or did does it has to do with the type of seed i bought from the store, as there a different name on the seed packages. Thanks
Cabbage 30 Apr, Eric Jones (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
You've probably got them in loose soil. The plants need firm soil. After planting the seedlings, firm the soil around them with your feet.
Ginger 21 Jan, Carl (South Africa - Dry summer sub-tropical climate)
Hi Rudolph The Ginger root may have been imported and that means the roots have been irradiated to kill off soil pathogens. Although edible the root will not grow ever. If you do buy root from a shop - try Woolies, they mark it when locally produced. Alternative is to look for a root with clear signs that it is starting to grow nodes (greenish horn like on the sides of the rhizome). If you cannot get any this way, go to Livingseeds and buy good quality when they do stock them - availability based on the season.

Carrot 04 Dec, Tessa (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Hi there. Rotating ctops is always a good idea to prevent build-up of pests and predatory fungi/bacteria in the soil. And alfalfa, comfrey (non-invasive varieties) and parsley are great for replenishing the soil. But I suspect in this case it's to avoid any carrot fly maggots that may still be present in the soil. Whatever cover you use needs to be weighed down at the edges to prevent access by the fly for laying eggs.

Coriander (also Cilantro, Chinese parsley) 28 Nov, Jeremy (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Durban coriander is very tasty and fragrant. The coriander we buy in Cape Town has no flavour and no taste ! Any idea why ? I just throw it away. Durban is sub tropical, and Cape Town is Mediterranean. Thanks, Jeremy Anderson, Cape Town.
Coriander (also Cilantro, Chinese parsley) 21 Sep, Bee-Pie (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Kwazulu-Natal receives more annual rainfall than that of the Western Cape. Their average annual temperatures are 21 degrees celsius and 14 degrees celsius respectively. East of 25 degree longitude(KZN), soils have formed under wet summers and dry winters. The weather and soil types are the main reason why grapes aren't as successfully grown in KZN as they are in the Western Cape. It all boils down soil type and weather.

I planted ginger in spring and watered them maybe once a week sometimes every second week in well drained soil with compost and bonemeal and some guano pellets. All my rhizomes rot. I planted a second time and its a month later and still no sign of my ginger growing. Can somebody please tell me why? I bought my rhizomes from the local vegetable market
Ginger 12 Feb, Margs (South Africa - Dry summer sub-tropical climate)
I planted ginger from PnPay and put it in the ground which is mulched from the trees above it. I forgot about it for months until I saw this weird dark green shoot next to the baby palm. I was transplanting the palm and found my ginger! Maybe just don't water it if there's deep mulch above it? Winter rainfall area.
