Broccoli 12 Nov, Phil (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi to all, a remedy for snails/slugs, sprinkle some sawdust around your garden ( if rain-repeat ) You can eradacate ( caterpillars & other pests ) using PYRETHRUM ( read directions thoroughly ) kills pests in minutes and has a WHP ( with holding period ) of 1 day. Yates SUCCESS is similar & controls a lot of pests. Can be harmfull to BEES ( don't spray flowers EG zucc/squash etc ) Has WHP of 3 days & up to 14 on some fruits. Contains SPINOSAD as in tomatoe dust.
Carrot 12 Nov, Brian (Australia - temperate climate)
Something seems to be eating my carrots under the ground. We find the tops lying on the ground, with no root left. Any ideas as to what is causing this, and what is the solution?

Hi I have some plants growing. I am happy to share if I can get a piece to you. I am in Hobart.
Spring onions (also Scallions, Bunching onions, Welsh onion) 10 Nov, Kelly (Australia - tropical climate)
We have brought two sets of different brands of spring onion seeds and neither have done anything not even germinated. The packets said they can be planted now. We have been watering and fertilising but the garden beds are new and dont have a lot of nutrients. But I would expect they would sprout and then not thrive not have nothing comeup. Any tips or ideas as to why this may be. Many thanks
Spring onions (also Scallions, Bunching onions, Welsh onion) 07 Aug, Tom (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Trying to grow these from seed is difficult. The tiny seedlings are easy to lose as well. Honestly just buy a bunch from a shop, cut the bottoms off about an inch long them put them into potting mix. You'll have usable tops within a month. Far, far easier than trying to grow from seed. I had aso failed to grow from seed many times, and then realised I wasted my time with that. They take very readily as cuttings from mature plants.
Spring onions (also Scallions, Bunching onions, Welsh onion) 07 May, hamish (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
onion seeds do not keep very well. storing in freezer improves viability. ...you are lucky to store viable seeds for more than a year in ambient condition....check the use by date.....a good long date will improve your success. Also check variety - it helps to have local seeds from successful crop.
Onion 10 Nov, Donita (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Hi, when onion leaves start making a flowers, what does that mean? Thanks
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 10 Nov, Maureen (Australia - temperate climate)
My silver beet plants developed many yellow outer leaves. When I pulled the plants up, there were mole crickets clinging to the roots. I believe mole crickets usually eat grass roots. Could the damage to the silver beet be from the mole crickets. How do I get rid of them?
Cucumber 09 Nov, Stevie (Australia - temperate climate)
Can i plant these right next to a mesh fence so they grow up the fence?
Corn Salad (also Lamb's lettuce or Mache) 08 Nov, robyn scott (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Bought seeds from Livingseeds. Will plant them in winter because Durban summers are too hot
Beetroot (also Beets) 08 Nov, Linda (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I am trialing the worm farm shown in Better Homes and Gardens in my raised garden bed. 100mm polypipe with holes and a lid. plant in the soil up to the holes, add worms and compost then every week add some food scraps and water and the nutirents seep into the soil. Would love any tips if anyone else has trialed this successfully.
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 08 Nov, wayne (Australia - temperate climate)
I have several varieties of chillies, they reseed every year.I then rotate to another bed or large pot to which I add compost and old manure, mix well.I then transplant the reseeded plants to the new bed or pot. After that it's water and liquid fertilizer. I'm never short of chillies, I dry them and jalapeno I pickle in vinegar (make your own concoction, add herbs, garlic whatever) They are delicious. So the idea is let some of your chillies fall to the ground and they will germinate when ready. Also if you make a little hot house over your plants they will keep going. I've had them up to three seasons. Enjoy
Corn Salad (also Lamb's lettuce or Mache) 07 Nov, Edward (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Beta vulgaris is silverbeet or chard, or could be beet root. So if it looks like lamb's lettuce then it's Valerianella locusta. Wrong label or wrong identification
Cucumber 06 Nov, lindsay (Australia - temperate climate)
my cucumber plant outside leaves are drying but they seem to be shooting from the centre .is this natural .this is the ist time i have tried to grow them

Capsicum (also Bell peppers, Sweet peppers) 05 Nov, solomon wambugu (Australia - temperate climate)
Am planning to start the growth of capsicum plant yet i don.t know the conditions it requires:temperatures, altitude, soil type, soil PH and the season.also where can I get the seeds as they are not locally available from my area as I have come from the remotest area in the sub saharan country by the name Kenya, a place called Laikipia north which is uninhabited and most referred to as the driest part and I want to make it productive.

Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 02 Nov, Nives Walker (Australia - tropical climate)
Should you remove the shoots which grow from the base of the main plant??
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 12 Nov, Brad (Australia - arid climate)
I would not remove them as they are tillers or extra extentions of the original plant that will produce extra cobs. More tillers = more cobs
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 31 Oct, Jim O'Brien (Australia - temperate climate)
Planted broad bean seeds 30/4 and just about to begin harvest on 31/10/14. That's 180 days. Is there anything I should do to speed up the fruiting process. Thanks
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 12 Aug, (Australia - temperate climate)
you sound like an industry grower. Old saying plant peas or broad beans on Anzac day. I let them do their thing for a while, then a bit of hi Potassium will speed up flowering. But you planted correctly,no worries. Be patient,31 Oct you have a good crop, all other events can adjust. But so far do nothing it's perfect. Gaz
