I found a sweet potato tuber with shoots about 2cm long in the vegetable storer in the cupboard. I want to know if it will keep for a couple of months so I can plant it out when the threat of frost has gone . I paln to plant tomatoes, capsicum, peas and chiilis at the same time..... mid October ish.

next time plant them in a very large pot, wine barrel etc and keep indoors by a sunny window till frost passes. just trim the shoots that over hang or trellis them

I didn't think so, but I read on the blog of a Canadian gardener how she had a massive crop last summer, so I'll have a try this year. She cut the sweet potato in half and suspended it with the end in water until it grew shoots, then twisted the shoots off and planted them once all danger of frost was past. She also warmed the soil with black plastic.

Have seen them at Kim's groceries (around the corner from Maccas in civic), also sometimes at "Asian Supa grocery" at Belconnen. You can also get seedling from Daleys fruit trees. Good luck :)

Hi Santy, The fresh food markets (belconnen markets and fyshwick markets) have sweet potato. Most often they only stock the orange variety, but I have seen white and purple (purple skin, white flesh) there also. I am going to try to grow them this year, but keep in mind that they are not really suited to our climate!

I have had for over one year a half 200 litre plastic drum with a sweet potatoes growing in it. Just this past weekend I have dug around in the totally dry soil looking to see what was there. I did this with my hands after loosening it up with a garden fork all around the side of the drum. The leaves were not dying off in fact new shoots are forming. I only did this as we have had 1 week of dry hot weather. I harvested 3 very good sized spuds and put the rest back and topped up with well mulched soil. No extra fertilizer has been used and this is the second time I have turned this drum. As the soil lowers and parts of tubers show I top up with more well mulch soil. With watering and good old mother nature we have bought no sweet potatoes at all for quite some time. I have no idea how long they have been growing I don't garden like that.
