If your soil is volcanic they should do well the best horseradish I ever grew was in red volcanic soil in the Redlands east of Brisbane

Looking at growing horseradish on a sloping block in N.E. Victoria (Yea region). Does the plant need protection from kangaroos, rabbits and is it mainly disease resistant? Does it need much attention or can it be left alone?

Not exactly close to you, but Psarakos in Thornbury (fruit and veg grocery) seems to always stock fresh horseradish. It is up the back in a tub of water sold by weight. Today I just bought a lump with shoots coming out the top and planted it. Then I googled and found this page... Hopefully it will grow well.

Margaret, I haven't found the perfect time, the size of the leaves don't tell me anything. Last week I did use some, just scraping away surrounding soil and seeing the thickness of the root helped, the root was fairly thick, about the same as two fingers plus a little more. Getting it out is the hard part, the roots go down a long way so I cut the amount I needed and replaced the soil. Be careful if you do this because the root is very strong, a serrated knife worked o.k
