No they are quite different. The ones with the dual crimson flowers grow like ground cover, pods only get to 3-5 cm and are far more suited to a temperate climate. The white flowered Asian type are more like climbers, pods get far bigger up to 15 cm, need a hot tropical climate to thrive in and all parts of the plant can be eaten, pods, leaves, roots. Besides size, the pods look identical.

Can I grow the same wing bean bulb two years in a row or do I have to harvest from new seed every year ? We are in Tauranga. Thanks for your time.

Winged beans are perennial and will regrow in the spring. To harvest the seed you need to wait until the pods are full ripe which will be late in the season. As they can be very strong growers some people pinch the tip out after about the 12th leaf. This will cause the plant to send out side shoots.

I have my first winged peas growing in my garden....seem to grow quite slowly so far ...but weather warming up now so expect them to grow faster. Mine are still at ground level....lots of photos I have seen online show them climbing.....so assume the will send up growth from middle and start to climb. I just read where it said to pick at 1
