I sow the onions in late January to early March, I prepare a patch in the vegetable garden for this. The stand where the onions will be transplanted to can be prepared in the mean time, If your soil is very heavy, sand can be worked in, as well as gracious amounts of organic fertilizer and ash (from your wood braai) This method give you time to ensure your bed is light and rich when your onions is ready to be transplanted around April. I use a clear plastic covering during coldest of winter months, just to keep the frost off. Hope this help.

Hi there I planted pumpkin about a month or 2 ago and there's 3 medium sized pumpkins on the plants but I had to removed 2 already due to rotting and I also found worms inside the rot. Just get them from Woolworths and plant. They are unbelievably prolific. But make sure it is SA grown and not imported Dutch Shallots (They have been radiated and wont grow). The SA Grown ones are normally on the shelves from late Autumn to Early Summer.

I am growing sweet potatoes for the first time. Got the tubers from the supermarket and kept them in my veggie drawer until they sprouted (approx. 1 month). I planted out 4 tubers in an area 3m x3m in August. I was told each vine would only reach 2 metres, but mine are growing a bit wild. I have had to cut the tips of the vines off because I have ran out of space. How often should sweet potatoes be watered?
