Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 31 Oct, Jo-Anne Rossouw (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Planted seeds from Cape gooseberries which grew immediately. Now it looks like long spear zigzac on sides leaves and have clusters of red dots all over. What is that? Leaves are also turning redish on the ends. Is something wrong? Is it even gooseberries or am i pampering weeds?? Not sure about the red cluster of dots.
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 09 Nov, Aleta Baron (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
This year I sowed mine in pots. Last summer was too cold. My thinking is it is too cold yet with the red on leaves. Sow in pots and you will know exactly.

Strawberry Plants 09 Oct, Andrew MacRae (South Africa - Dry summer sub-tropical climate)
Runner plant has strawberries but mother plant none this year. Mother plant had lots last year
Strawberry Plants 25 Oct, (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Usually you plant out the new runners and dig in/throw away the old plants, although you can produce a crop for 2-3 years with the mother plants.

Irrigate regularly. 2-3 times a week. Small amounts when plant are small then increase the water as they grow.
Onion 27 Sep, DAVE MILES (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Australian Brown are starting to have seed stems, should I cut them off or allowed to seed
Onion 29 Sep, (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
A plant going to seed is finishing it's life and producing seed to continue the cycle of life - new plants. A plant then puts most of it's energy into producing the seeds. Time to harvest now or real soon.

Asparagus 22 Sep, Atang Tlopo (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
I want to know if I can get two years old Asparagus crowns.
Asparagus 26 Sep, (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Probably not - if so probably expensive. In Australia a 9 mth crown is about $10 - a 2 yr old probably $30 and you would need 3-6.

Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 10 Sep, Pst Dennis (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Good Day. I have transplanted my chilli and pepper plants to the ground. Please advise what fertilizer can I use and at what stage must the plants be fertlizer Thank you
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 14 Sep, Anonymous (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
If you prepared your soil well before you transplanted then you wouldn't need more fertiliser. Put manures/compost in your soil 1-2 mths before planting and dig it in well a couple of times. Put a little fertiliser in when you plant. Make a little furrow where you are going to plant them, sprinkle some fertiliser in the furrow and mix it into the soil - then plant your crop. Just buy a general garden fertiliser - one for vegetables. If your plants grow to one foot and they are yellowish then they need some fertiliser - if they are nice dark green colour then your soil is good.
Onion 07 Sep, Don Cropper (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)

Sounds like your soil wasn't fertile enough to produce an onion bulb. The plant is going to seed already.
Horseradish 28 Aug, Geraldine Thaumuller (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Can I grow horseradish on the South Coast of KZN
Horseradish 21 Sep, Bee-Pie (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Horseradish is a cool weather plant so plant it in Autumn. Just ensure good drainage and air flow around the plants as the humidity factor in KZN could cause powdery mildew. Please send me some! 063 409 3911.
Garlic 18 Aug, Gladys (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Can i plant garlic in August?
Garlic 21 Sep, Bee-Pie (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Hi Gladys That is not adviced. Garlic is a cool weather crop with a long growing period. Garlic is a relatively easy crop to grow if one follows the "rules" so to speak. The cloves only form and expand during the last few weeks of its growing period. Watch Sean's video on growing great garlic.
Garlic 22 Aug, (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
It does say Feb to April.
Garlic 15 Aug, Jacques Labuschagne (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)

Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 14 Aug, Anna (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Last season our gooseberries suffered a lot from the potato beetle. What biological / organic solutions are there for the effective control or even prevention thereof? If no effective biological solution exists, are there any chemical pesticides that have been tested with cape gooseberries and are recommended with pre-harvest intervals defined? Kindly let me know.
Garlic 03 Aug, Jeanette (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
