Asparagus 21 Dec, Pam Neasham (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Where can I buy asparagus crowns.. My late husband grew such large crops we used to give them away. I have down-sized since his death leaving my plants behind and would now like to grow some again.
Asparagus 24 Dec, John (Australia - temperate climate)
In Australia asparagus crowns are normally available from nurseries in the winter months as bare-rooted crowns. berry plants, rhubarb and fruit trees are available at the same time. It is not difficult to grow from seed, you will just have to wait another season before you can harvest the spears. Trust this helps.
Asparagus 17 Dec, Mike Hattingh (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Can you please assist me with a list of suppliers from whom I can source asparagus crowns?
Asparagus 24 Dec, John (Australia - temperate climate)
In Australia asparagus crowns are normally available from nurseries in winter. Thet are sold 'bare rooted, ssometimes loose and sometimes in damp sawdust. Other plants that are sold the saame way include - strawberries bramble berries, currants and fruit trees such as apples, pears, peaches, apricots and plums. You could also grow them from seed but would have to wait another seaaon before harvesting those delicious spers. Trust this helps.
Beetroot (also Beets) 17 Dec, kansiime bosco (South Africa - Semi-arid climate)
Thanks for the teaching above, QN, which disease attack beetroot and how can the problem be prevented Does beetroot need a lot of water while in the garden? * can we plant the seeds direct or they should go thru the nursery bed *at what age should be transplanted??
Beetroot (also Beets) 24 Dec, John (Australia - temperate climate)
Beetroot is relatively disease free. Beetroot is much better sown direct into the ground than transplanted from a seed bed. Try and space the seeds out or buy seeds prespaced on seed tapes. It germinates fairly esily and needs consistent water to get get good sized beets that are not tough and stringy. If you have sown the seed direct you can always use thinings as 'baby' beets. Trust this helps.
Tomato 11 Dec, Ayanda (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Which season is right to plan tomatoes in the Eastern Cape,Centane.
Tomato 24 Dec, John (Australia - temperate climate)
I am not familiar with the climatic zones of South Africa but imagine it would be similar to Australia. In frost-free areas tomatoes can be grown all year round. Otherwise plant them after the last frost in Spring. They are easily grown from seed and also strike readily from cuttings of side shoots placed in a small jar of water. They will sprout roots fairly quickly and then can be planted out like seedlings. protect from dryness and heat until they are established. Trust this helps.

There is a stunning hydroponics plant which produces strawberries on the North Coast. I know the owner had troubles at first, but he has mastered the skills now. Google Farmer's Weekly article of 2014-2015 (I think)

I don't see why not. I live in temperate Australia but they are grown from Tasmania in the south well into Queensland in the north. Check an atlas for latitude. Happy strawberry growing!
