Salsify (also Vegetable oyster) 19 Feb, Inga (USA - Zone 7b climate): Yes, Salsify will grow in Central Florida throughout the winter. it likes a cool season so I would plant it Late October and let it do its growing till March or April. It can take up to 150 days to grow. Mine grew well in raised beds.

Sunflower 18 May, Carol Graf-Haslam (USA - Zone 10b climate): When should I plant Mammoth grey stripe sunflower seeds? I live in Southwest Florida and the temperature can range from 32 for a few hours during the winter with highs in the mid to Upper sixties but starting in April the temperature goes into the 90 +range. Should I plant them in October or November 4 a January crop or plant them in March for a May crop? I don't want them to burn and I don't want them to freeze. Please help. Thank you and I am glad to see that the friends in South Africa are also in the same predicament as I am.

Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 12 Apr, Dale Westergard (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate): I live in Utah, USA. We grow most vegetables here, and potatoes do well. Where could we obtain some starts (slips), etc. to start growing kumara? I've been to NZ several times, enjoying everything about Aotearoa, especially, Kumara. Would appreciate any helps/suggestions. thank you. Dale Westergard.

(USA - Zone 10b climate): I’m zone 10b as well; I started my tomatoes in early February, the weather here is never too cold, so the worst that can happen is that they “overwinter “ and wake in the springtime. I had volunteer tomatoes come up in OCT & NOV and they just grew slowly in a container until they woke in mid mid March and then grew vigorously in April and they’re still giving fruit. These were cherry and Roma tomatoes. I’ve also been sowing seeds every two weeks with determinant (New York, Purple Russian & beefsteak) tomatoes. I freeze all the overages for winter. So, basically, in 10b in southern Cali you can plant anytime and you’ll be fine.

Okra (also Ladyfinger, gumbo) 08 Feb, Kristin (USA - Zone 10b climate): I don't think this is right. Your calendar says Okra will not grow in Miami, FL, (according to your site is 11a but USDA says 10b) But they grew and produced for me like crazy in the dead of summer. Granted I watered frequently but the heat did not faze them. And I am in Homestead, FL, 5 min from the Keys.

Okra (also Ladyfinger, gumbo) 08 Feb, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate): Kristin, if you check here https://www.gardenate.com/zones/#zone-US , you will find that Miami is included in both 10b and 11a. We use the USDA for our advice.

Lettuce 18 Jan, Doug (USA - Zone 5b climate): Planting lettuce indoors and will transplant outdoors after last frost in May. Keeping some of the plants indoors and will move to larger containers before the roots bind up. My starting mix will need added organic fertilizer after the real leaves are put on and grow light intensity needs to be increased somewhat for indoor food production. If this experiment works, I may continue growing through next winter. As for my outdoor lettuce, last summer I managed to get several cuttings. This year I will be planting on the north side of pole beans so that when the beans are tall and the summer heat comes on, my hope is the shade will increase my lettuce yields for a longer period of time .

Celeriac 29 Nov, Beate (USA - Zone 8b climate): I want to grow some Celeriac and wonder if the southern heat in the summer will affect its growth. I live in Columbus Georgia and celeriac is not known down here. Also, if I sow in January, will the frost affect it?

Celeriac 29 Dec, Donna (USA - Zone 8b climate): Being as Celeriac is a root crop, it can easily handle Winters in Georgia, IMO. I live in Port Angeles, WA, and I grow Celeriac all year around. However, I do use about 4" of Alder wood chips. Works great at keeping everything nice and cozy. :-)

Rhubarb 28 Nov, Sandy (USA - Zone 8b climate): I got a clump of rhubarb from my sister this summer. I have a brick planter in the front yard that had some room, so I planted it there, beside an artichoke plant. Gave it a good dose of vitamin B1, kept it well watered and it has been doing very well, looking very healthy, and, all of a sudden, it turned yellow. It started turning yellow in October. Could it be, it needs more water (I haven't been watering it much, now that it is looking so good)? Could it be the frost (we have had a few frosty mornings. Just in case it's the frost, I've been covering it at night. Thank you for any insight that can be offered.

Rhubarb 26 Feb, Carol Nevius Jones (USA - Zone 9b climate): Rhubarb goes dormant in winter and regrow in Spring. Yellowing after a frost is normal.
