Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 28 Sep, Craig (Australia - temperate climate)
My broad beans were planted from seed the end of march. I have used seasol + seasol vegetable concentrate once a week lightly watered in a watering can mix then a deep water. The flowers started in July and the plants are 200cm high. the beans started beginning September and are now in full bloom. be patient and topping the plants to avoid over-growth and limiting new bottom shoots will help stimulate the beans. water morning and evening for late bloomers. When the bees start to move on your in for a bumper crop.
Tomato 28 Sep, allen lee (Australia - temperate climate)
In regards to those aphids under the leaves may actually be white fly these tend to scatter when disturbed if so I found that sticky traps yellow in colour work very well they are sold in most hardware and nurseries. Hung around plants with infested bugs you will be amazed how well they work and no need for spray.
Peas 27 Sep, scurs (Australia - sub-tropical climate)

Just a reminder to all those having problems with fruit fly in their tomatoes capsicum etc please ensure if you do find them in your fruit or vegetables pick up the infected fruit destroy by sealing in plastic bag leave in sun to destroy maggots if you don't the grubs will multiply giving you a bigger job next season in ridding of them at extra cost to your pocket ! PS DON'T just throw in the bin seal first ' From little things big thing grow"....

Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 26 Sep, Debbie (Australia - temperate climate)
We are ex-pat Kiwis and now live near Port Macquarie NSW. Could you please tell us where we can access some real NZ Kumara plants?
Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 09 Apr, David (Australia - temperate climate)
I believe that it is illegal to import NZ kumara to Australia, so you will only be able to obtain propagating material from someone who has been growing it for years or has obtained it illegally. That said, it is certainly not impossible to find people growing it, but they probably won't be advertising it. Keep putting feelers out in forums like this. (0r you might be able to buy some from a supermarket and sprout that - Liz)

Celeriac 24 Sep, Amanda (Australia - temperate climate)
generally, lots of leaf but no bulb would mean too much nitrogen and not enough potassium. Nitrogen is used for leaf and stem growth, K is essential for fruit and flower formation. grow in soil that has had hungry plants like leafy greens of broccoli grown in it previously, and avoid high nitrogen manures, use well matured compost instead. The parent crops of modern cultivars of celery and celeriac grew in marshes, so make sure soil is deep and moisture holding. All through summer, it will be just leaves but the bulb will swell suddenly in a burst of metabolic resource direction in autumn/ early winter, in order to give itself food stores for the cold season. If temperatures are cool in your winter, you can leave in the ground unitl you need to harvest them.
Strawberry Plants 24 Sep, fonsie (Australia - temperate climate)
one of my favourite ways to eat strawberries is heated with a little balsamic and sugar. Serve with fresh chocolate mint and ice cream.
Rhubarb 24 Sep, Judy (Australia - temperate climate)
How long do I leave the stalks before I pick and cook them? I've been waiting ages for the to turn the beautiful red colour but they are still green with red tinge! It is only a young plant, does that make a difference?
Rhubarb 18 Oct, Wendy (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Judy, When I bought my rhubarb the man at the garden store had 2 types - one where the stalks turned red and one where they stayed green. Did you by a varity that goes red? Wendy
Rhubarb 25 Oct, Judy (Australia - temperate climate)
Thanks Wendy, I really didn't take that much notice as I didn't realise you could have the green variety! I think though it is the red. I have read other comments and maybe it's because the plant is new, may take another year or so to be at its best!
Horseradish 23 Sep, Simon (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi all, I can tell you that Northey Street City Farm in Brisbane has mature horseradish seedlings on sale. I picked up an great plant yesterday for $9...sounds expensive but seeing as it's rare as rocking horse poo to find it's well worth the price for an excellent, healthy plant.

Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 21 Sep, Mark (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I think Brisbane is sub tropical/tropical. I think you are going to need the seeds they should be in the fruit unless the cultivar you have is an F1. Then it would be pot luck what you get. I'm growing heirloom varieties and will be harvesting the seeds from them. If you want some let me know.
Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 04 Dec, Bridget Larsen (Australia - sub-tropical climate)

Potato 20 Sep, Bill (Australia - temperate climate)
I have tried to grow potatoes several times, not very successfully, my leaves grow up to almost a meter in height, but there are very few tubers underneath. Also my potatoes do not seem to flower, and the leaves get attacked by some insects or bugs. I used a very rich soil and mulch; is there too much nitrogen?
