Rhubarb 03 Jan, Barb (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi Andrew, Some varieties of rhubarb go redder than others - some stay quite green. However, we've found more mature and cooler weather tends to redden those prone to be being red. So best wait and see, giving them a seasonal top up with good compost to keep them well fed.

Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 21 Dec, Mardi (Australia - temperate climate)
Should you cover the roots as they appear above the soil as they grow
Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 30 Dec, Di (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I cover the roots with extra compost or soil and mulch. It seems to help support the corn. Also don't forget to rub your hands through the tops to help the pollination process.
Carrot 20 Dec, Ian (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
My carrots are bolting to seed with woody roots. Why is it so? Please help as this is the second crop to do this. I live in a cool climate in Tasmania, 600 metres above sea level. Crop planted mid tolate Sept. In loamy soil.
Carrot 18 Jan, Ferran (Australia - temperate climate)
Carrots will bolt if they get to dry or the tempreture gets too hot. This is what I suspect is the case. Lots of water with good dranage often a differant time of year. Make sure you have a variety which suits your region, I can't recommend because I live on the coast in NSW. The other main reason is too much nitrogen but this is diagnosed buy limited root growth and excessive leafy growth before they go to seed. It is not too late for another planting so try planting a row every two weeks keeping them nice and moist. Shade may be necessary on very hot days. I hope they work for you next time.
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 20 Dec, Sharon (Australia - temperate climate)
I have bought birds eye saplings and potted them in September. It is now end of December but there have only been a few additional leaves and seems to be stunted in height due to the cold weather in Melbourne. What can I do to help them as the temperature does not seem to get any higher than 25C? Melbourne will have the next 2 months warm, but will drop down below 25C once again in March, and I am afraid my saplings may not have a chance to thrive.

Try Dipel, it is an environmentally friendly product which is dynamite with caterpillars.
Cucumber 14 Dec, George (Australia - temperate climate)
My father is an avid cucumber grower and he and all his friends this year initially had cucumbers but later the plants grew with plenty of leaves but no cucumbers. In Sydney we have had alot of rain probably daily over the last few weeks but it was interesting that he and all his friends had the same issue of not many cues but heaps of growth and leaves.
