Tomato 20 Apr, Jane (Australia - temperate climate)
We had a great crop of mixed tomatoes this year but could you please tell me why the skins on the tomatoes are tough. Many thanks
Tomato 08 May, Tom (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
that depends on the variety you are growing and where you live. In Canberra the nights are COLD and I notice some of them have very tough skin. Now I grow one with no name, Grossie Lissie, s. Marzano and Jersey Devil, they all good.
Tomato 21 Apr, TOM TOM TOMATO (Australia - temperate climate)
they would be hybrids which are bred for a tough skin for transport so they don't bruise.

Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 19 Apr, Debi (Canada - Zone 8a Mild Temperate climate)
I live in one of the warmest climate zones in Canada on Vancouver Island and would like to grow rosella here on the coast of the Salish Sea. I was wondering if they would grow as a protected annual here, or with luck a perennial?
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 27 Feb, Brigitte (Canada - Zone 7b Mild Temperate climate)
I live in Vancouver,BC and would like to grow them too. Have you already tried? I think I'll start seeds and grow them in my greenhouse.
Rosemary 18 Apr, Peter (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I am originally from NJ, USA. I now live in Costa Rica. When I lived in NJ Rosemary loved the summer months in that partially shady area I kept it, but once I brought inside before frost, it almost always got the powdery white on it as you describe. It is called powdery mildew and it can be easily controlled by mixing a teaspoon of baking soda in a pint of water...once dissolved, spray it on the plant every few days until the problem goes away. Mildew loves acid environments and the bicarb makes it alkaline, killing the mildew but not harming the Rosemary.

Pumpkin 18 May, JohnTheAussie (Australia - tropical climate)
Ive learnt that the first time my butternut pumpkins bloom, they bloom only female flowers, but the bext time they produce both. Not sure why, but many in my area say the same thing. I actually stopped at a large farm growing them to ask, why mone wouldnt produce fruit after flowering, and they told me it wouldnt the first time. However hand polination was needed the first time, after that the bees and insects did it all for me.

Brussels sprouts 13 Apr, Akela (USA - Zone 13a climate)
what time of year should I start brussels, started some in march, but they are just now 4 weeks later about 2 inches above ground.
Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 13 Apr, Charles Lee (Australia - tropical climate)
I bought my "seed" tuber as a vegetable in the supermarket. Some gardening experts say to wait until leaves yellow & plants die back before harvesting. I am in Townsville and that did not work. Plants grew 12 months a year. Tubers were bigger than footballs, woody and had insect attack and rot. Suggest you follow other advise that recommends harvest in 16 weeks. Tubers are smaller and tender.
