Rockmelon (also Canteloupe) 01 Jul, Max nicholas (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Not unless you have a green house, rockmelons grow best in hot climates. The frost wouls also kill them even if they were fully grown.

Is it possible to grow horseradish in Thornlie.
Potato 09 May, Eren kara (Australia - temperate climate)
the following answer is not based on scientific research but my own experiences . In temperate regions of Australia you don't get the deep penetrating frosts of the northern hemisphere so I say to you that go ahead and plant your potatoes into the ground about the second or third week in June ,if you're growing on a small scale you may be able to provide some kind of cover in an extreme situation but not to worry even if you see shoots turning black the business end oh a potato is under the soil and it will be fine .

Ginger 07 May, annette gideoni (South Africa - Dry summer sub-tropical climate)
what is the best way to store ginger for the next season
Ginger 08 May, Kathy (Australia - arid climate)
Bury it and keep it in a small pot of dry or very slightly damp soil for everyday use. Always keeps fresh , never any waste and always a supply . A young Taiwanese couple showed us.

Strawberries (from seeds) 26 May, Mark (Australia - temperate climate)
Hey Karla, Strawberries remain relatively dormant through winter months, best time to transplant etc though don't expect much growth till the warmer months.

Pumpkin 04 May, gary (Australia - temperate climate)
ref: April 4. Cut off one of 8 pumpkins and made soup. They are definitely ready. My freezer is full of soup for the winter. Thank you all who answered my email. Appreciated.
Pumpkin 04 May, gary (Australia - temperate climate)
They need hand pollination. Had same problem at the beginning but ended up with 8 after manually fertilizing them. Bit late now but keep in mind next time.
Beetroot (also Beets) 03 May, Debbie (Australia - arid climate)
I have very tiny (almost microscopic) black insects emerging from holes in the shoulder of a few of my beetroot next to the stem. I saw a hole and investigated it, and a dozen or more poured out. The leaves are fine, and there is no damage further down the beetroot (I pulled it out to investigate). Does anyone have any idea what they might be and what I should do?
Shallots (also Eschalots) 03 May, Willie Oosthuizen (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
We want to buy shallot bulbs Potchefstroom area
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 03 May, Lyn (Australia - temperate climate)
My bush beans are struggling this year. I have planted them in a different raised bed to last year. This latest crop has some of the beans looking more brown than green. They are still crispy but discoloured. Are they edible? I trim off leaves that look unhealthy and throw them in the bin. Should I persist with this crop for the good beans which I still get or dig them all up due to a disease problem? Thank you for your time. Lyn
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 29 Jun, Gilberte Marie Nijs (Australia - temperate climate)
I always try to avoid putting diseased leaves in the compost. I am trying this kind of bush bean this year, I hope it will go well. I wish i could give you some advise but am a very novice gardener.
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 15 Aug, Lyn (Australia - temperate climate)
Thank you for replying! I did give up on the beans, dug them up and threw them out. I left that raised bed free for 2 months and have now removed the top 15cm or so of soil from all of my raised beds (hoping to be rid of all problems). I have added compost and fresh soil and will try again. Wish me luck!
Beetroot (also Beets) 03 May, ann (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
my beetroot leaves are getting eaten. What could be causing this?
Beetroot (also Beets) 01 Jul, Gilberte Marie Nijs (Australia - temperate climate)
Last year we had a lot of trouble with locusts or grasshoppers, they love the foliage of spinach and beetroots. A good idea is to put nets over the vegetable beds, it gives a bit of shade and you can still water them without lifting the net.
Broccoli 02 May, Vickie (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi. I have had a lot of issues with cabbage moth and caterpillars in the past. I'm a lazy gardener, and would also like to use as few chemicals as possible. I have found dead bees in my garden before. Last year I bought a fine net to cover my crop, and it worked beautifully! The sun still gets through, but no bugs can get in. Well worth the investment, as it will last me several years. Bunnings sells a version, or you can get them online from Diggers. Look for the fine mesh netting, not the bird netting.
Rhubarb 02 May, Stephen (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I am wondering when to harvest which varieties - I thought there were spring and autumn cropping rhubarb varieties but most descriptions seem to say 'year round'. Are there specific (and available)varieties for a separate spring and autumn crop? Thank you. Steve.
