Compost tea compost tea can be made from your compost. Compost: 1 layer of straw 1 layer of greens (alfalfa, lucern ....)or kitchen scraps sprinkle of wood chips sprinkle of soil sprinkle of cow or other manure sparingly sprinkle with water mixed with two tablespoons of unsulfured molasses and then start the layers all over again until the bail of straw is finished. Cover with black plastic. After 4 days turn compostheap and then every 2 days until no warmth is felt. Fill a bag with the compost and hang it in a drum with water. Either blow air into the water with an airpump or turn the water with a stick so it shapes a vortex. Do this several times during the day. You will have enough organic fertilizer from one compost heap for about a season. (sprinkle your garden vegetables every week or 2 weeks). Always keep your compost heap covered. If you have leafy vegies add a little bit of seaweed concentrate. Do not give sea weed concentrate to your fruiting vegies eg tomatoes, capsicum etc as it will encourage folliage but not the fruit.

Mycokos are almost bullet proof, I have planted them at odd times of year and they dont mind. Just put them in in a shallow hole and jump back!

Hello, I am in sub-tropical climate zone, have planted cauliflower, they start out lovely bright white, but are turning a purlply/ mauve colour, at first I thought it may be a mould of some sort, but this all started before any rain, also the florets seem to be separating a bit, the biggest ones are only a bit bigger than a squash ball . Any ideas would be appreciated, this is obviously my first crop! Thanks very much

If you cut off the long flower stalk at the base the plant will continue to grow and produce stalks. They last for years as long as you do that.

I'm in cairns and it grows pretty good here, as long as it has good drainage. I keep mine in a pot, and they say it doesn't like full sun but mine grows well in it. You should be able to grow it from a piece you buy at the supermarket:)

When do you pick the fruit? What size should the fruit get to? The paper husk is purple at the moment. I live in Gawler S.A. It is in a large cane pot, hessian sleeve. And its raining, so quite wet soil.

Hi Cathy, the paper husk will turn yellow and fall the plant when ready or you can try picking them when yellow should come off by light touch, the size varies but the largest I have seen is probably the same as a medium sized cherry tomatoe, mine is also in a pot and grows very well loves full sun and water as well, flowers well when weather is warm.

Could you tell me please.What is the best mix of soil for carrots ? I am haveing trouble with them not growing down it is like the soil is to hard .I end up with bent carrots. I have nice garden beds to work with but no luck . I am thinking maybe soil not draining. Or to much water they get 25 min every day by water system If you can help thank you. I am 72 and email help is better for me Regards John Mackney
