Hi Kierian, I think the most likely reason they aren't doing too well is that you have planted them in March or thereabouts and in your type of climate, tomato season is finished. A general rule of thumb for planting in temperate climate is to wait until after Melbourne Cup Day, when hopefully all the frosts are gone. so now would well and truly be the right time to have another go, also don't over prune them you really only need to pinch the laterals and maybe just not so much fertiliser, a little bit of potash occasionally will improve your fruit and only water at the base of the plant ,not overhead. Tip: Rosemary doesn't play well with many other herbs. I've consistently seen it's stems grow almost at right angles away from nearby parsley, for instance. To avoid this you'll need approximately a 1.5 metre radius/distance away from parsley. Oregano and thyme tend not to affect the rosemary much, but these will begin to grow around or away from rosemary - it's quite funny to watch a plant do a slow-motion about-face; and if you think that following that the idea of the old folk song sounds nice and you plant parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme in a pot, pretty much everything stunts and dies. Start cuttings in the spring thru summer (just snip off the top 30cm of a stem and plant it 15cm deep in-situ) and keep the soil damp/watered (once a day is usually enough) until you see the end of the soft tip of the cutting stand up under it's own wieght, consistently. For a few days-to-a-week after making the cutting, the soft tip will rise and fall with the heat/light of the day and then finally stand up. That's how you know it's taken. It'll shoot away pretty quickly after that.

I PLANTED MINT AND CUCUMBER IN THE SAME TRAY. THE MINT IS NOT GROWING AS IT WAS BEFORE . IT IS MORE THAN 6 WEEKS BUT THERE ARE NO FLOWERS IN CUCUMBER PLANT. HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO PRODUCE THE CUCUMBERS

just want to know why u have to cover the celery when it grows into stalks what is the reason for it and u stated its a cooler climate then why do they sell in nurseries

It is not so much, cover the stalks but protect the side stalks. Celery is best grown close to each other in rows. This then blocks out the sun from the side stalks. With lots of sunlight the side stalks become very green and bitter. Usually you trim these off the plants when harvesting them. Or protect the sides from the sun and then you can eat these stalks also. It is ridicules what nurseries and Bunnings etc sell in the wrong time of the year. Go to "Seed Collection Pty Ltd" and find their planting guide for Veg, flowers, herbs.

I live in Cairns and my garden faces north which means I get the full sun all day long. There are children running about so I can't plant any plants with thorns or sharp edges. I love colour as I am a happy person. What would you advise me to plant?

when growing white asparagus, how are the beds watered and when. When finished are the plastic covers removed to allow the plants to recouparate and then re covered when ready to pick once more.

There's a good ebay seller called Darren from seedsforyou. He is based in Orrorroo SA and he usually posts the seedlings at a very low price, but good heirloom quality.

My bush beans are struggling this year. They are in a raised bed 10m long. Half is broad beans and half is bush beans. The broad beans are flourishing but the bush beans are struggling to get out of the ground. About half didn't germinate and the leaves on many have been chewed by something. I have planted new seeds in the locations where the first planting didn't take. Many other vegies in my vegie garden are doing very well. Any tips?

planting time for Brussels sprouts depends on the variety and can be as early as Oct-Nov and as late as Feb. Good seed providers should state what month they should be planted. Look up an old book - Vegetable gardening in Australia by Norman de vaus. He has good advice and a good understanding of how to grow brussels sprouts. Finally some of the seed you are buying may not be well selected and may never give good spouts no matter what you do. Hybrid seed is one option if you are sick of failing at Brussels sprouts.

Is it safe to plant chilli seedlings when the surface is dry or must I wait for the rain to fall first,because I'm in Limpopo and it hasn't rained in ages and I would like to start planting my chilli seedlings.so am a bit panicking because of the dry season but I have a borehole.please advise me on what to do.

i have a crop of kumara growing from some i purchased in Woolworths (though not seen often, but they have some at present) I cut the top off one, let it dry a bit and then put in small amount of water, grew several runners, which i then planted out. I did put some sand in the garden bed though, as I always remember my dad telling me the Maori used to grow their kumara in the sandhills. Seems to have worked well.
