In addition to my prior reply: don't forget to check the weather OVER the ENTIRE duration of growth. That is, the average days to harvest for carrots is 60 to 80 days. The days to harvest are calculated based on ideal growing conditions (temperatures/sunshine/water). So if your planting seeds on December 01 -- then expect germination by around Dec 15 - and then add 80 days -- which yields March 04 -- so you need to verify that you have the correct growing temperatures in Dec, Jan, Feb and March (in case you carrots take a little longer). Best of LUCK -- and remember the 60 - 80 days is for the average carrots some varieties take longer -- like my favorite - the DRAGON CARROT takes 90 days. Dragon Carrots are sweet and full of color. The nine inch roots have a bright orange interior with an amazing reddish purple skin. Full of nutrients including lycopene, Dragon Carrots are good for the body and look fantastic in the kitchen. I really can't answer your question, (Can you grow carrots in December in your area) but I can give you all the growing criteria and then you can check (via prior years climate data for your area) whether your area meets the conditions for carrot growth or not. .Carrots: -- minimum germination temperature is 2c : optimum germination is 10c to 25c (the temperatures must be sustained). Seeds germinate over a 2 week period -- if crust forms on the top of the soil, germination will be restricted. Carrots like well drained, well aerated loamy soil. They are SOMEWHAT drought resistant. -- optimum growing temps : 15C to 20C , with a minimum of 5C and a maximum of 24C Outside of the growing range (less than 5c or more than 24c) the carrot goes into "dormancy/holding pattern" with extreme temps killing the carrot. Carrots like well drained soil and they like aeration... so planting in hills (or hilling) is beneficial and allows carrots to grow longer. Carrots can tolerate shade but do best in full sun. I looked up the temperatures for germination and growing on the Atlantic Canada's Advisory board publications (since I don't have all my germination and growing temps memorized). Hope this helps you decide whether or not you can grow carrots in your area in December.

.I Grow mine in September. I Grow my seeds in toilet rolls with seedling mix. 10 day or less to germinate.. plant out before bees arrive about in September ,October.(will help pollinate the flowers ) Harvest Nov. Yummy I have heard you can grow them all summer in a shaded place . Doing it this year Waste of time growing them through winter, without the bees Growing season is Auckland

sewing in late autumn/early winter means that plants will be well developed in early spring ready to flower. results in a much earlier crop than if you sew in spring...best to sew some to grow over winter and some in early spring to get extended cropping - Richard Washer

Hi I’ve got a rhubarb plant I planted at the end of sept/early oct. Several of the larger leaves have turned yellow (about 3) and about 3 new baby stalks have turned yellow. There are still about 10 large green healthy leaves on there. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

The larger leaves could be just old ones. The new leaves could be lack of fertiliser.

When I plant turnips or radishes they never grow a root. I only get greens. I planted in Compost and fertilized at planting with 13-13-13. What can I do to get the root to grow?

You are using too high a fertiliser. N is for leaf growth P for roots and K is for flower and seed. So back off the N. Just mix a bit compost to soil and mix in well - plant the seeds and see how they grow. If poorly give a light fertilising.

Ask in a shop if you want to eat or plant. Otherwise they don't grow in temperate or cool/mountain areas. Need tropical - sub tropical climate by this website.

Google fungus on cucumbers. It comes up with powdery mildew - see if the photos look the same as your cucumbers.

Planted dwarf Beans early September with a lot of success. Have harvested 3 times including this morning. I can see some leaves are starting to turn yellow. What vegetable can I plant to replace. Summer can be extremely hot at times

I live in central California, zone 9b. I plants softneck garlic last year and it did very well. I refrigerated it for 3-4 weeks and then planted in November. Doing the same this year.

My ginger was growing well after getting a piece of my neighbours established plant. We have had a very wet winter and after dieing right back it has not resprouted. Neither had the neighbours. Did the wet do this? Should I lift the bulbs and replant it?

I just harvested the jerusalem artichoke that we planted last spring. The flowers were done but the plant was still alive. I have lots of small tubers and thick root with sprouts. Is all this OK to cook and eat?
